The Winnipeg Beach

BOARDWALK

View Plank Owners

It's incredible to believe that in 1900, Sir William Whyte, then vice-president of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company had accomplished what seemingly appeared to be an impossible dream...he founded Winnipeg Beach and within the span of three years had built a rail line linking it to Winnipeg. On Saturday, June 6th, 1903, five hundred anxious beach-goers piled on board the first scheduled train from Winnipeg destined for the new holiday Mecca. Winnipeg Beach became an instant success. Boasting attractions such as the boardwalk running the length of the beach, hotels, an amusement park featuring a roller coaster and penny arcade and a dance pavilion, Winnipeg Beach played host to thousands of Winnipeg amusement seekers for some fifty years. The famous "Moonlight Express" and "Daddy Train" carried thousands of beach-goers until 1955. The CPR discontinued all passenger train service to Winnipeg Beach in 1961.

The old Winnipeg Beach Boardwalk, the merry-go-round, the dodge'em cars, the roller coaster, the dance Pavilion ,the carnie beach attraction, the "Moonlight Special" and "Daddy Train" and the T-shaped pier that enchanted generations of Winnipeg Beach visitors are all gone - only the beach remains - and the dream of Sir William Whyte is now only history.

We hope that all the reconstruction of the Boardwalk with the interpretive signage will serve as an important reminder and keep us mindful of the need to preserve our heritage for the benefit of future generations.
